Relief From Dandruff: The Most Common Cause Of Itchy Scalp

Itchy scalp is an embarrassing problem. It’s very uncomfortable, and we try to hide it. We HATE talking about it. We know in our heads (pardon the pun) that millions of people suffer, yet we are ashamed to ask for more information about the itchy scalp issue.

Itchy scalp is, indeed, a common complaint. Itchy scalp causes can be a  number of things: rash, seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff to us!), parasites, allergies, acne, or infection. The good news (yes there is good news about this!): these are all conditions you can seek treatment for. The bad news: you need to tell someone (ie: your doctor) that you suffer from this embarrassing issue.

Dandruff is the most common cause of itchy scalp. If you know that you have dandruff, and not one of the other medical conditions listed, you can try these scalp care suggestions at home. If you don’t have dandruff, you should seek medical attention and not try these scalp care pointers without a doctor’s okay!

Shampoo daily with a dandruff remedy shampoo. Long gone are the harsh formulas that smell bad and that leave your hair feeling like straw! Trust us… these are not your Granny’s dandruff shampoos! These formulas are easy to use, pleasant smelling, and leave your hair soft and well balanced feeling. Many of these shampoos also contain herbs and extracts that will soothe the itching, at least temporarily.

If you have already tried the dandruff remedy shampoo, step it up a notch with a tar shampoo. Tar shampoos are extremely effective at reducing dandruff. However, they do have a couple side effects: they can stain light colored hair and they have a stronger aroma. For these reasons, tar shampoo should be tried after you’ve already used anti-dandruff shampoo.

In addition to the daily shampoo, try a gentle daily scalp massage. It may sound silly, but a short scalp massage session will increase blood circulation and oxygen to your scalp. This leaves your scalp feeling refreshed and decreases that itchy scalp feeling. But there’s a better reason to engage in this activity: the improved circulation can help decrease the dandruff. If nothing else, it will leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed!

Another home remedy, which is easier said than done, is the advice you probably don’t want to hear: Stop Itching! Your mom always told you scratching your head would make it worse, didn’t she? It’s true…maybe. If you are scratching too vigorously, you can actually scratch the skin open, leaving you prone to an infected cut on top of the dandruff. No good will come of scratching your itchy head.

Dandruff is horrible and embarrassing. With some time, a good scalp care routine, and patience, you can find relief from your dandruff problem and cure that itchiness for good.
